Shortbread cookies

Cookies are not only well-known confectionery and favorite dessert of all children, they are also unique dainties of all times and tastes. Cookies are popular in most countries of the world. Some nations have their own names for cookies. For example, English and Australians call them biscuits, in Spain there are galleta (or hard biscuits), and Germans traditionally bake keks (or crackers) for Christmas.

Italians went further and named each shortbread cookie with an unusual name, such as amaretto or biscotto. The homeland of cookies is believed to be ancient Persia. But nowadays there is such a huge variety of shortbread cookies that they can be eaten as an independent dessert or used for cooking other dishes.

First of all, health benefit of cookies is in its ingredients. Their nutritional value includes B and PP vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, iron and organic acids. Often pediatricians recommend parents include shortbread biscuits into children’s’ nutrition as a quick source of energy. Cookies baked with pieces of fruits and nuts saturate our bodies with additional useful vitamins and substances.

Shortbread cookies are those baked according to special recipe that gives them their crumbly texture (from an old meaning of the word short). Such biscuits are especially suitable to have a snack with tea or coffee. Moreover, they are very light and digestible comparing to other sweet pastry.

The benefits of shortbread cookies include such effects on organism as control of body energy exchange, and saturation of human organism with vitamins, minerals and quick energy. Cookies also enhance the activity of nervous system and have a positive effect on the functioning of heart and circulatory system due to B vitamins they content.

On average the caloric value of cookies is about 400 kcal per 100g., so those people having problems with excess weight have to be very careful with the quantity of cookies they eat.  This doesn’t mean people should completely avoid consuming cookies, but it is necessary to restrict the pastry eaten to 2-3 pieces a day. They would saturate your body with enough quantity of useful microelement without giving you excess fat or calories.

With regards to children, parents also need to control how many cookies their kids eat. Too many sweets in child’s nutrition may lead to problems with little teeth and stomach.

Now, having considered all benefits and disadvantages of shortbread cookie, we also have to mention the main reason we like them for – cookies return us to childhood, they give us pleasure, bring joy and make us happier.
